Now that the calendar has turned to a new year, all eyes are on the next major holiday – National Pie Day, celebrated every year on January 23rd. To celebrate National Pie Day, Rockland businesses have a yearly tradition of opening their doors to serve up more than 50 different kinds of pies to raise money for the Area Interfaith Outreach (AIO) Food Pantry, serving Knox County. The 13th Annual Pie Tour will be held on January 29, 1:00pm-4:00pm and will feature a record 26 venues, hosting 30 businesses from both Rockland and Camden this year. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children ten and under, and are selling fast. Pie Tour tickets are available for purchase online at www.PiesonParade.com for the first time ever.
Pies on Parade was founded 12 years ago by the Historic Inns of Rockland, to raise funds for the Area Interfaith Outreach (AIO) Food Pantry and celebrate National Pie Day (January 23rd). Originally it was an inn-to-inn tour, but within the first few years it grew to include additional businesses in the community. In 2017, a record 30 businesses, inns and restaurants will serve up more than 50 different pies, including sweet and fruit pies and tarts, egg pies, pizza pies, shepherd’s pies, pot pies and even whoopie pies. New businesses to join the tour this year include Center for Maine Contemporary Art, 250 Main Hotel, Rockland Harbor Hotel, Penobscot Language School, Home Sweet Home Bakery and Seagull Cottage. What’s even more significant is that three Camden businesses, including Camden Hawthorn Inn (which also participated last year), Inns at Blackberry Common, and Towne Motel, have gotten in on the pie-mania, and will be cooking and serving pies at these new Rockland venues.
Tickets for the 13th Annual Pies on Parade Pie Tour are $30 for adults and $15 for children ten and under, and 100-percent of the funds from tickets sales go directly to the AIO Food Pantry. All those businesses participating donate their time and materials so all the money raised from this event can service the community. New this year, tickets are available for online purchase. Simply go to www.PiesonParade.com or www.HistoricInnsofRockland.com and follow prompts for purchasing tickets. Tickets are also available by calling 207-596-6611 to reserve ahead. Since tickets sell out each year, it’s a good idea to call soon to reserve your chance to enjoy this fabulous pie-a-thon. Special Pies on Parade one and two-night packages can be booked at Berry Manor Inn, LimeRock Inn and Granite Inn now until they are sold out. Additional packages may be available from participating lodging properties.
Over the past twelve years, more than $134,000 has been donated to AIO’s Food Pantry from this event to help provide food for Midcoast families. Pies on Parade is the food pantry’s largest fundraiser of the year, providing enough funds to feed 100 hungry families for a full year. Each $30 ticket follows the 3-4-5 formula: a $30 ticket translates to 3 meals a day for a family of 4 for 5 days! Since all proceeds from Pies on Parade are donated to the AIO Food Pantry, tourgoers can feel good knowing your day of pie-joyment will provide 60 meals to hungry families on Maine’s Midcoast.
Additionally, a Silent Auction will be held at the Trackside Station Restaurant on Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 5-7pm. Look for overnight getaways, gift certificates, products, entertainment, plus much more. There will even be special pie-themed cocktails featured. All proceeds will benefit the AIO Food Pantry & Fuel Assistance Program.
Look for oil canisters placed in venues throughout the Pie Tour. Funds raised from oil can donations will be earmarked for the AIO Food Pantry’s Fuel Assistance program and will be matched by Maritime Energy for the first $2000 in donations.
Pies on Parade is presented by the Historic Inns of Rockland, Maine with help from broadcast sponsor Blueberry Broadcasting. Additionally, Schooner Bay Taxi provides complimentary shuttle service throughout the event. Pies on Parade would not be possible without the generous support of the participating businesses involved and the 65 individuals that volunteer through the AIO Food Pantry.
